The Siege of Yarikawa was a battle between the Mongol invaders and the garrison of Yarikawa. Following the Mongols landing, the invaders proceeded to besiege the town. Jin Sakai was able to gather enough forces and after convincing Yarikawa's ruler Ujimasa Yarikawa, he defended the town from the Mongol assault, helping to repel the attackers and end the siege. Due to his assistance, Yarikawa gave their full support to Jin's cause in helping free the island of Tsushima of Mongols.

Siege[]

Following the fall of Castle Kaneda, Khotun Khan refocused his attention towards the region of Toyotama to conquer Tsushima. To that end, he assigned one of his best generals, Temuge, to conquer Yarikawa. Temuge and his war band proceeded to lay siege to the Yarikawa clan, preventing most movement in and out of their stronghold. Meanwhile, Lord Shimura, seeking to gather allies to retake Castle Shimura from Khotun, assigned his nephew Jin Sakai to recruit his former enemies. Along with siblings Yuna and Taka, Jin arrives at Yarikawa and sees that the Mongols have them surrounded.

However, Yuna and Taka, being Yarikawans by birth, remembered a hidden entrance, which the Mongols have not discovered, that they used when they were children. Despite Taka's nervousness about the risks, the trio snuck past the Mongol forces and used the entrance to gain access to the Yarikawa stronghold. They then witness Temuge personally approaching the front gate and speaking to the Yarikawa clan, having learned their language. The General offers to show them mercy if they submit to him, but if they do not, he threatens to show them terrible misery. Temuge then leaves to give them time to decide their future.

Yuna, Taka and Jin go to speak with the clan leader, Ujimasa Yarikawa. They fail to convince Ujimasa, who believes that the Mongols will move on from his clan, that they cannot withstand a siege. Yuna and Jin decide to try and help repelling the Mongols by finding and bringing Yarikawa's best archers to the stronghold, and Taka, who wishes to become more involved in fighting the Mongols despite being inept at combat, asks to come with them. While Yuna is concerned by her brother's growing fearlessness, she and Jin reluctantly allow it. After reminiscing about their childhood and having to save Taka from a bear ambush, the trio locate the archers and set an ambush for the arriving Mongols, during Taka directly aids in the fighting, to Yuna's concern.

With the archers returned to the Yarikawa stronghold, the defenders await for Temuge's attack. Atop the tower in Yarikawa stronghold, Yuna and Jin prepare for the Mongol attack and begin drinking together. By nighttime, the drunken Yuna tells jokes about Kenji and talks about her abusive mother, whom Yuna took Taka away from when she broke her then six-year-old son's arm. Once it becomes clear to him that the Yarikawa clan will not surrender, Temuge launches a full-scale attack on the settlement. The Mongols are able to breach the walls and attack the inside of the Yarikawa Stronghold, but suffer heavy loses at the hands of Jin Sakai. Temuge then orders a bombardment of the town with his siege weapons, prompting Jin to temporarily exit the stronghold to destroy them. This, however, allows Temuge's forces to overrun the Stronghold and force them into the inner keep. Temuge personally joins the battle, and begins killing Yarikawans inside the inner keep until Jin confronts him and challenges him to a duel.

Recognizing Jin Sakai as the Ghost of Tsushima and remembering the reward Khotun put out for his head, Temuge accepts the challenge. Despite being a formidable shieldsman, and using incendiary oil to light his blade on fire, the General is defeated by the Ghost. As a bloodied Temuge staggers towards his men, Jin impales the General through the back before beheading him in front of his men; this killing marks the creation of the Ghost Stance, a stance that Jin uses to terrify Temuge's forces into fleeing Yarikawa. With the Mongols in full retreat and the clan saved, Yuna, Taka and Jin convince the Yarikawans to stand up together and ally with Shimura against the Mongols.

This heavy defeat, combined with the brutal demise of one of Khotun's best generals, brought a broad psychological impact on the Mongols, who begin to believe that Jin is an invincible foe. Lifting the siege also greatly boosted moral for the island's defenders, and helped provide Lord Shimura the forces needed to retake Castle Shimura from the Khan.
